Hoots from the Pine Woods Owl

An extraordinary hand written, hand drawn and colored student publication which appeared for only two issues in December of 1864. It declared itself "Devoted to gayeties, gravities, and the diffusion of useful knowledge". There are no names, and no indication that it was published by any of the college literary societies. It appears to have been an early version of an "underground" student newspaper. The authors' Confederate sentiments are clearly expressed (and drawn), and the publication undoubtedly did not have the official sanction of the college.
