Dr [dear] Sir,
The people of this section of Florida suffered severly last year, and somewhat the preceeding year, from sickness and short crops. The cotton crop of last year was very short indeed, and the consequence is that it had been next to impossible to collect money or to sell property at a fair price. I have been unable either to sell land or to obtain money from those to whom I had previously sold on a credit.
Since the date of my last I have not obtained one [unclear: dollar?] on account of the debts due to the Asylum. My health however, continued feeble, and I found it necessary to spend a considerable time on the sea shore. I am now in pretty good health, and intend to start tomorrow morning in hopes to collect some money before my return. I have not been able to do business to any extent since I last wrote you. Such has been the state of my health, that I found it impossible to visit Kentucky, as was my intention during the summer. I intend to pay you a visit this winter after our Court of Appeals which sits in Jany [January] next.
The crop of this year promises a fair yield, and we may hope for better times. The planters of our country are without money and a good deal in debt. Another crop as good as that of the present year will it is believed will give relief. Immediately on my return I will write you.
