Charles B. Moran

Charles B. Moran, college football coach and professional baseball umpire, was born in Nashville on February 22, 1879. He coached football at Texas A&M during 1908-13 (38-8-4) and at Carlisle Indian School in 1914-15, then went on to train the Praying Colonels of Centre College in Kentucky during 1917-23 (53-6-1). "Uncle Charlie" was an inspiring coach, a strict disciplinarian, and an imaginative football strategist. He coached the Praying Colonels in their 1921 victory, 6-0, over Harvard University. Moran left Centre in 1923 to coach football at Bucknell College in Pennsylvania, then at Catawba College in North Carolina until 1939. Moran, also a National League baseball umpire during 1917-39, officiated in four World Series, in 1927, 1929, 1933, and 1939. Moran considered Horse Cave, Kentucky, his home from 1904 until his death there on June 14, 1949.
