Centre College Magazine

First appearing in February 1859, the Centre College Magazine was a product of the college's literary societies. Three students from each of the three literary societies served as editors. In its first issue, the editors' declared that the magazine was "designed to promote the growth of a literary spirit among the young men." Professionally printed by a local printing company on a monthly basis throughout the school year, the magazine contained poetry, short stories, essays, items of campus news, obituaries, and editorials. The tone was often serious and devout, but humor was just as frequently found on its pages. The journal enjoyed faculty support, and often announced "official" college information, such as printing news of a tuition increase. The magazine's last issue was April 1861, probably a victim of the hard times at Centre brought on by the Civil War.
