George Morgan Chinn

George Morgan Chinn, historian and soldier, was born in Mercer County , Kentucky, January 15, 1902, the son of George P. and Anna (Carlisle) Chinn. He attended Millersburg Military Institute and Centre College in Danville. In 1941 he entered the U.S. Marine Corps. An automatic weapons expert, Chinn served until 1961 and retired as a colonel. He was secretary-treasurer of the Kentucky Historical Society in 1959, its director from 1960 to 1973, and deputy director from 1974 to 1980. Chinn wrote several works on pioneer and local history and produced the five-volume work The Machine Gun (1951-87). He was the holder of several weapons patents. Chinn married Haldon Grimes on August 29, 1924; they had one child, Ann Hardin.

Chinn died on September 4, 1987, and was buried in Springhill Cemetery, Harrodsburg.
