Facilities Management
The roots of today's Facilities Management department can be traced back to 1840, when the Trustees directed the faculty to hire a person whose full-time job was keeping the buildings and grounds in good order. The Trustees also directed the faculty to assess any damages that students might do to the buildings, and if the individual offender could be discovered, to require him to pay four times the amount necessary to repair the damage; if the person could not be discovered, to assess the entire student body the amount of damages.
