William B. Guerrant

Dr. William Barnett Guerrant was named as the acting president of Centre College following the resignation of Dr. Walter A. Groves in the summer of 1957. A 1913 graduate of Centre, Guerrant received an M.A. from Centre in 1914, a doctor of sacred theology from Biblical Institute, New York City, and was a graduate of Louisville Presbyterian Seminary. After graduating from Centre, Guerrant was superintendent of Highland Institute, Breathitt County., and served as professor of philosophy and religion at Austin College, Sherman, Texas, from 1939 to 1943, and then as president of the school for ten years before retiring in 1953. Guerrant would only serve as acting president a few months before Thomas A. Spragens assumed the college’s presidency in November of 1957.
