Hangchow Week

Begun in 1947, Hangchow Week was a week of events - skits, dances, athletic events, auctions, etc. - held each spring by Centre students and faculty to raise funds for the benefit of the war-destroyed library of Hangchow University in China. The project was originated by Robert J. McMullen, former president of Centre, and earlier for many years the head of the Hangchow institution. During the event's first two years the students raised almost $2,000 to purchase books for the university's library. In 1949 the student committee decided that further funds would go to sponsor a professor at Hangchow.
