Frederick W. HinittFrank H. Heck

Dr. Frank Heck came to Centre College in 1948 as chair of the history department, and remained on the faculty until his retirement in 1974. He was chair of the history department until 1967, and served as dean of the College from 1955 to 1965. Born in Racine, Wisconsin, on October 18, 1904, Heck received an A.B. degree from Lawrence College, and a master of arts and Ph.D. degree from the University of Minnesota. Prior to coming to Centre, he taught at Nebraska State Teachers College (Kearney State College) and Miami University of Ohio. Heck was honored by Centre for his distinguised career in the academic field and by the Episcopal Church in Kentucky for his services to the Church. Centre presented him an honorary degree in 1982, and the Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Lexington presented him the Bishop's Silver Medal in 1979. He was the founding member of Centre's chapter of Phi Beta Kappa. Heck died March 30, 1983, after a short illness.
