Phi Beta Kappa
Founded in 1776 by undergraduates of the College of William and Mary, Phi Beta Kappa is the oldest and most respected undergraduate honors organization in the United States, recognizing undergraduate juniors and seniors for scholarly achievement in the liberal arts and sciences and broad cultural interests.
Centre College was awarded a chapter in 1970, with the Beta of Kentucky chapter formally installed in 1971. When awarded, Centre was only the second college or university in Kentucky (following the University of Kentucky) to be so honored, and among the five smallest schools in the nation with Phi Beta Kappa chapters.
