In 1858 David A. Sayre offered Centre $5,000 for the construction of a new library. Built in the area where Breckinridge Hall now stands, the first Sayre Library was not completed until 1862. Sayre was a prominent Lexington businessman. Following the completion of the second Sayre Library in 1893, the octagonally-shaped building was demolished.
