Yerkes Family

Several members of the Yerkes family have played important roles in Centre's history.

Amelia R. Yerkes graduated from Caldwell College in 1901. She, along with Juliet Poynter, were elected to the Board of Trustees in 1949, the first women to serve on the Board. In 1963 she was elected Trustee-Emeritus. Ms. Yerkes died in 1974.

John W. Yerkes, the father of Amelia Yerkes and an 1873 graduate of Centre, served as a member of the Centre Law School faculty, Commissioner of Internal Revenue, and College trustee from 1903 until his death in 1923.

Rev. Stephen Yerkes, grandfather of Amelia Yerkes, was a member of the Centre and Danville Theological Seminary faculty, and served on the Board of Trustees from 1863 until his death in 1896.
