Danville Sept 18th 59 [September 18, 1859]

Dear Mother

I have been expecting all week the letter which yesterday evening came to hand. Nevertheless the delay did not diminish the pleasure. As I wrote Pa I had almost entirely recovered from that illness which afflicted me for two or three days before I left. I have felt a slight returning of it for a day or two past, but trust it will be but transient. Heard a very indifferent sermon from Dr. Green this morning which served however to give

me an excellent appetite for my dinner which I was not tardy to improve.

I mentioned in my last letter that Mrs. Green would not take any more boarders in which I was mistaken. As a couple of her or rather the Dr.'s relations (Green by name) came up to college and stopped here until a boarding house could be provided. But failing in their endeavors to secure a suitable one, the madame very considerately concluded to provide them with a room. They are a very green couple in every sense of the word and their verdancy affords us no little amusement as the table. Dr. also has another relative whom he is retaining in the family until he can succeed in finding some other lodging whom I much fear we shall be compelled to keep. I hope not however. He was just asking us a few moments ago if Mrs. Green would give him a room which she might do, as she says if we would permit him to study in our room this winter. We told him with all candor that we would permit no such thing as it would be a

great inconvenience to us. He is a member of the Freshmen class and rather a slippery fellow. Our other two boarders are members of our class (Junior). By the way we have regularly entered the Junior, having had no examination in mathematics yet. We will I suppose be examined when we have become more settled in our college affairs. A son of Dr. Grundy came up last week to be examined for the Freshman class, but the faculty found him sadly wanting in the languages. Consequently he became very much discouraged and in opposition to all the entreaties of his most particular friends left for home a day or two afterwards.

Mrs. Green says she cannot have our washing done for us at home, but we have secured the services of a woman living within a short stones throw of the house, so it will not inconvenience us any. She washes well at $1.23 a month, as cheap as it can be done anywhere. We have taken up for the present Analytical Geometry, Physiology, & Philosophy of Rhetoric.
