Danville Oct. 11th 59 [October 11, 1859]

Dear Father

I believe it has been about a week since I wrote you and have none from you to my certain knowledge in the interim and in consequence of which am forced to rue that assertion made by me in a former letter that I would not hereafter indulge you by writing so frequently but I think I am getting the worse of it.

We were to have been examined in mathematics yesterday, but it was postponed until some future time not specified. Tim Clay, Dave Bell (nephew of Joshua F. Bell)

& myself went to the Knobs hunting Saturday, a distance of about 2 miles. Clay & myself became separated from Bell in the morning in the midst of the jungle, and wandered about lost for something near 3 hours. A drove of deer, consisting of 11 passed us in the evening at a distance of about a hundred yards. Having nothing but double barreled shot guns, we did not shoot at them.

I suppose Aunt Mary and Pauline have arrived at last. Tell Aunt M she must answer my last letter. Doctor Green has gone to Synod will be absent 2 weeks new students continue to come

in. Did I tell you that John Cleveland had joined the Athenean Society. Garniss and my own most eloquent persuasion could not induce him to become a Chamberlain. His roommate is an Athenean however, which no doubt weighed very heavily with him.

Nothing more now. Yours etc. [Chapin scratched out]
