Monday

I wrote you yesterday but didn't get my letter in the office. Dr Green this morning read out our marks. Mine was next best in the class. A fellow by the name of Montgomery got 93. The Dr remarked that Montgomery as a general thing recited [better] more precisely than I did, but he said that my analyses were the best, [that] stated that they were remarkably fine repeated it two or three times. The three men who were best last session, when I got 45, this session stood two of them 87, one of them I should have said before got 90, he

and I got the second best mark. Dr said I had made [illegible word crossed out] more progress than any man in the class. I tell you, I felt quite proud when my mark was read out, to think that last session I was the poorest, this session the best. Most of the class got between sixty & 80, some of them 45. Some six whom I beat in Dr Green's room beat me in Prof Beattie's [Beatty's] though I got the mark I deserved in his recitations. A student is ranked according to his standing in Dr's room.

Garniss got 75 in Dr's room 58 in Prof Beatties [Beatty's].
