Dear Pa

I received a letter from you two or three days ago, but as I have had nothing particular to write have postponed answering until to-day.

Lum [Columbus] Scales came over from the Military Inst. [Institute] just last week, had entered the senior class, but will have to make up some Greek & Brown etc. He will be able however, to graduate this year, by hard study. He is boarding here. Mrs. Green is fix-

ing him up a sleeping room. He will study in my room until warm weather. John Cleveland has also come here to board, so that the whole of the Covington delegation is now boarding in this house. I accuse Mrs. Green of great partiality for us, she replies that we ought to be preeminently good to merit the partiality she is showing us.

Dr. Green is not yet able to get out of the house. The Senior class however has been reciting for the last two days over

here, instead of in the College. Seven of us have to speak to-morrow.

Some of the citizens of Danville will raise a "union pole" on Saturday. I have heard of a conspiracy among the students to cut it down. I understand that the secessionists intend raising one on the corner opposite that on which the union pole stands, which is to be much longer, larger, etc. So you see "Little Brittain" is not behind in showing her colors.

Dr. Green is to dedicate the new Henderson Female

Institute next week, on which occasion a grand speech is expected. He generally makes great preparation for such occasions.

I have not yet got the overcoat. Will inquire of Mrs. Hughes this week for it. I guess you will begin your preparations for moving to Ill. soon, won't you need my services? I could spend a couple of weeks helping you settle and make up in time for examination. I heard Mrs. Green say the other day that the Dr. intended writing you soon.

My love to all
Very afctly [affectionately]
