Athenaean Literary Society. By-laws
Section 1
Article 1
The exercises of this Society shall consist in debating, declaiming, and reading original compositions. The members shall be divided into four classes designated by the letters A, B, C, and D. The first class: A debate, B declaim, C read, and D rest. The second class: D debate, A disclaim, B read, and C rest – and so on alternately.
Article 2
It shall be the duty of every member to attend every meeting of the Society, to observe good order, be respectful towards all the ordinances, to perform all the duties assigned him, and use every commendable effort for the advancement of the Society.
Article 3
Any member absenting himself for three successive meetings without good excuse shall be suspended.
Section 2
Article 1
No fine shall be less than 10¢ nor exceed $5.00, unless otherwise determined by special vote of this Society.
Article 2
No member shall leave his seat or the room while another is occupying the floor, or whilst the vote is being taken.
Article 3
Any member failing to perform his duties in composition, declamation, and debate shall be subject to a fine of not less than 10¢ nor more than 50¢.
Section 3
Article 1
Every member shall in speaking confine himself to the issue, and when departing therefrom shall be called to order by the President, and if he still persists shall be subject to a fine.
Article 2
Any member indulging in personal reflections towards another member shall be fined.
Article 3
Every member shall when addressing the President rise from his seat, and failing to do so shall be subject to a fine.
Article 4
Any member absenting himself from the hall during its meeting longer than fifteen minutes shall, on being reported by the Door Keeper, be subject to a fine.
Section 4
Article 1
Either of the officers failing to perform his respective duties or being absent without an excuse shall be subject to the following fines: President - $1.50; Vice President - $1.50; Recording Secretary - $1.00; Corresponding Secretary - 75¢; Treasurer - $1.00; Critics - 50¢; Door Keeper – 50¢.
Article 2
When the President is arraigned for any default, it shall be the duty of the Vice President to take the chair, and hear the President in his defense.
Section 5
Article 1
When the installation of officers is in order the Secretary shall [missing word] the names of the officers elected, and as their names are called they shall present themselves before the President, who shall propound the subjoined interrogatory to them, to which if they respond affirmatively the President shall pronounce them duly installed officers.
Do you promise upon the honor of gentlemen faithfully to perform the respective duties of the office assigned you in this Society?
Article 2
When a person presents himself for initiation, the President shall propound the subjoined interrogations to him, to which if he responds affirmatively, the President shall declare him as duly initiated, and entitled to all the immunities of the Society.
Do you promise upon the honor of a gentleman to keep all the proceedings of this Society inviolably secret, to comply with all the requirements of the Constitution or By-laws, and to do all in your power to promote the interest of the Society?
Section 6
Article 1
Every motion which appertains to the amending of the Constitution or By-laws, or of a like purport, must be presented in a written form before the Society.
Section 7
Article 1
When the President fines a member, he shall proclaim it stating how much and for what offense he is fined, and his case shall come up under new business.
Section 8
Article 1
Members shall pay their initiation fee within two weeks after their initiation.
Section 9
Article 1
In the irregular debate, members shall be limited to one speech.
Article 2
When a vacancy occurs in debate on account of the absence of any of the debaters, the President shall have the power to fill the vacancy by appointing any member of the Society thereto.
