Section 5

Article 1 Initiation of New Members

When initiation of members is in order, the President shall propose the following questions to the candidate for membership before having the Constitution and By-laws read to him.

Do you promise upon your honor as a gentleman to keep forever secret the proceedings of this Society, and if after hearing its Constitution and By-laws read, you are not willing to subscribe to them, thereby becoming a regular member if the Athenaean Literary Society, do you promise to keep sacred and inviolable this pledge of secrecy?
After hearing the Constitution and By-laws, the President shall propose the following questions to him.
Do you subscribe to these, the Constitution and By-laws of the Athenaean Literary Society, and promise always to perform the duties required of you by them, and to let nothing prevent you from the performance of your duties in this Society, except Providential hindrances, or business which you believe to be more important?
To which questions, if he answers affirmatively, the President shall declare him a duly initiated member and entitled to all the immunities of the Society.

Article 2 Installation of Officers

When installation of officers is in order, the Recording Secretary shall call the names of the officers elect, and as their names are called they shall present themselves before the President, who shall propose to them the following questions.

Do you promise upon your honor as gentlemen, faithfully to discharge the duties devolving upon you in this Society as officers set forth in its Constitution and By-laws, to use your influence for the general good of this Society, and do all you can to promote its interest?
To which if they answer affirmatively, the President shall declare them duly installed officers.

Section 6

Article 1 Duty of Members

It shall be the duty of every member to attend all the meetings of the Society, to observe good order, perform all duties assigned him, and use every commendable effort to promote the general good of this Society.

Article 2 Privilege of Members

Every member shall have the privilege of voting upon any question which may come before the Society, but no member shall have the privilege of speaking more than twice upon any one subject nor longer than twelve minutes in his first and ten minutes in his last speech, except by special permission from the Society, which shall be given by a simple vote of the Society without debate.

Article 3

Nine members shall constitute a quorum for the Society, invested with power to hold regular meetings and transact any business which may concern the Society.

Article 4

The initiation fee of this Society shall be $4.00.

Article 5

The initiation fee shall be paid within two weeks after a member is received into the Society.

Article 6

None shall be considered regular members of this Society unless they are at the time connected with the College or Preparatory Department, and unless they are fully amenable to the laws of College.

Article 7

As soon as they cease to occupy this position, they shall no longer be regarded as regular, but irregular members.

Article 8

An irregular member shall have the right of admission to the Society whenever he so desires, and shall be privileged to speak upon all questions before the house, but shall be debarred the privilege of voting on questions before the house, also of introducing any motion or resolution to the house.

Article 9

An irregular member by paying the library fee shall have access to the library.

Article 10

Irregular members shall be exempt from all assessments, but shall be subject to the government and fines of regular members during the meetings of the Society.

Article 11 Amendment to Section 2, Article 2

If, however, a young man is preparing himself to enter College under a private teacher, and declares his intention to enter College at the earliest opportunity, he shall, on application for membership, be initiated and considered an irregular member until he enters College.
