Gentlemen Trustees,

Feeling sensible that in strict justice, the money which I advanced for tuition in Centre College, except so much as ought to be deducted for the time I went which was about six weeks, should be refunded, I now state for your consideration the cause of my leaving college. My health would not admit of my continuing longer. I became despondent for I had poor prospects of gaining information under Mr. Pearce [i.e., Pierce]. I do not intend Mr. Pearce any harm, on the contrary I wish he may do well, but in my humble opinion he is not qualified for the station he now occupies, however if my health had been good I should have continued. I have felt a delicacy in expressing my opinion in relation to Mr. Pearce, but will do it publickly [sic.] if I find it necessary. It may be asked why other students have not complained. I answer, they do complain, but having better health or more money to squander than I have they remain. The languages constituted my chief study and of course it was necessary I should be under a skillful teacher.

I therefore gentlemen leave the matter with you trusting that you will not consider it just, under such circumstances, that something should be kept for nothing.
