Board of Trustees Minutes (1819-March 28, 1933)

The most important and continuous record of the college's early history, the digital version of the Trustees' minutes includes volumes covering the years 1819-1853 and 1863-1933. Unfortunately, the volume covering the years 1854-1862 has been lost for many years, and its fate remains unknown.

Barr, Lockwood. Letter to John A. Cheek (January 7, 1904)

Angry letter from Barr to John A. Cheek, treasurer of Centre College, about the delay in the Class of 1903 receiving their dilomas.

Ireland, John W. Letter to Executive Committ of Board of Trustess (June 11, 1903)

Ireland was the presienet of the Class of 1903. He writes about the poor quality of their diplomas, and asks that they be exchanged for ones of higher quality.

Lawhon, J.K. Letter to John A. Cheek (July 14, 1901)

Lawhon was the treasurer of Atascoas County, Texas. He writes to John A. Cheek, the treasurer of the Board of Trustees, asking how to handle a Mexican squatter on land willed the college by Ormond Beatty.

McCalla, John M. Letter to Trustees (April 27, 1833)

Letter seeking additional information about sending his nephew, James Clark, to Centre College's preparatory school. The letter mentions that the boy's father has moved to Illnois, apparently leaving the young man in the care of his uncle. Also mentioned is the "education farm", the Presbyterian Education Society's farm on the outskirts of Danville where young students could earn money to pay their college expenses.

McHenry, Barnabas. Letter of Resignation (July 4, 1820)

Letter of resignation of Rev. Barnabas McHenry from the Centre College Board of Trustees. McHenry, a pioneer of Kentucky Methodism, was one of the original Trustees named in the 1819 act of incorporation of the College.

Magoffin, B. Letter to John A. Cheek (June 6, 1903)

Plaintive letter from Magoffin to John A. Cheek, treasurer of Centre College, asking that his note for $1,000 to endow a professorhip be returned.

Mullins, Samuel G. Letter to Trustees (July 1831)

Letter from Samuel G. Mullins, student at Centre College, to the Board of Trustees, outlining the reasons for his leaving school and requesting partial refund of his tuition. One of the reasons is his strong disapproval of the teaching abilities of Rev. John J. Pierce, Professor of Greek.

Storm, A. K. Letter to John A. Cheek (May 1, 1903)

Letter from A. K. Storm, manager of the Saxton Military Band and Orchestra, to John A. Cheek, treasurer of Centre College, asking if Centre wanted the band to play at Commencement.

Student Letter to the Trustees (February 24, 1832)

Petition from four Centre students that Thomas Nichols, Principal of the Preparatory Department, be removed from office.

Walker, N. Letter to Trustees (July 16, 1828)

Letter from N. Walter to the Trustees of Centre College inquiring about the position of superintendant on the college's farm. The Presbyterian Education Society of Kentucky was a group formed early in Centre's history to raise funds to enable students interested in the ministry to attend Centre. The society operated a farm on the outskirts of Danville where young students could earn money to pay their college expenses.
