Magoffin, B. Letter to John A. Cheek (June 6, 1903)

Duluth, Minn. June 6, 1903

To the Trustees of Centre College, Danville, Ky.

Dear Sirs –

More than a dozen years ago, I gave my note for $1,000 to endow a scholarship in Centre College, at the earnest solicitation of Dr. Young. Since then I have lost what fortune I then possessed, and am wholly unable to pay it, on any part of it, and I ask the courtesy of its return to me.

The note was given as charity and in a sacred and religious spirit, as Dr. Young then expressed it “for God and Humanity.” I felt confident at the time of being able to pay it, and of course expected to do so, but as I am now unable to send my own sons to college, and since there was no consideration, I most respectfully ask you to act with the same spirit of charity and benevolence in returning that prompted me in giving it.

I regret that poverty compels me to make this appeal. And I am now in the decline of life, and beg you to relieve me of this source of worry by cancelling and sending to me the old note. Please act without delay.

Respectfully submitted,
B. Magoffin
