Centre College Faculty Recommendation to Admit Women (September 22, 1887)

To the Board of Trustees of the Centre College of Kentucky

Gentlemen:

At the opening of the present collegiate year, several applications for admission to the college classes were made by young ladies of this vicinity. It was thought best to refer the matter to your body at the meeting to be held Sept. 22d next.

If not improper the Faculty would like to express our opinion, the result of consultation and discussion in Faculty meeting. Not wishing to do anything to alienate the good will of such applicants or of their friends, and fearing we may be anticipated by other colleges in cultivating this growing sentiment in favor of the higher education of our girls, we would say, admit all girls who come prepared to take the course for the degree of A.B.

By thus limiting the condition of entrance, the number of applicants will probably never be large until the college advertises for them, and a due encouragement be given to such girls, as have the ability

and energy to prepare themselves.

Very respectfully

A.[Alfred] B. Nelson, Sec.[Secretary] Fac.[Faculty] C.[Centre] C.[College]
