Dear Sir,
Allow me, through you, to make known to the Board of Trustees of Centre College, my resignation of the Chair of Mathematics, the same to take effect at the expiration of the present College year.
It is, I presume, wholly unnecessary for me to state to the Board the reasons, in whole or in part, that have led me to this decision. Suffice it to say, that I am impressed with the conviction that it is my duty, as it is perhaps for the best interests of the Institution, that I should carry out the decision above indicated.

1. James C. Randolph served as professor of Greek from 1867 to 1869, and professor of mathematics from 1879 to 1876.
