Louisville Mch 13th 1861 [March 13, 1861]

Dear Bealle [Daniel Bealle Waggener]

The project of establishing a branch of the ΑΚΦ [Alpha Kappa Phi] in Louisville, we came to the conclusion had better be given up. My investigations had not been extensive enough. Soon after the receipt of the Constitution etc., I paid great attention to the selection of a lot of boys who would do honor to our order, but was almost entirely unsuccessful. There was such a meager chance of getting a respectable number that Dave & I did not consider it practi-

cable to proceed.

Most of the boys that attend our University are these, viz: in the Law department, they are generally from a distance, and stay only five months, ditto in the Medical dept. In the Academical dept. they are entirely too young to entrust with the secret. The remaining class of young men here take no interest in belles lettres, and consequently their interest would be only almost momentary. I regret that I put the Society to so much trouble, but tell them that I did my best.

The truth is Bealle, I do not think that, here

where no such order has ever existed, and where there is no benefit to be reaped from it, in the procuring of speakerships, that the purposes of it are not sufficiently appreciated.

I wish the Society be extended till we can meet at all colleges and where the [illegible word] efficacy for the promotion of our members will be great. Hoping you all success, I remain,

Your Friend in α.α.π. [alpha alpha pi]
[illegible name] B. Forman

PS.
The Constitution will come along with this.
