Alpha Kappa Phi Records

The Alpha Kappa Phi fraternity was established at Centre College in 1858, and lasted until the late 1870's. The exact date of its death is vague, for the records do not mention any last meeting of the society. More likely, it quietly faded as fewer and fewer members joined, and those students who were members increasingly failed to attend meetings. Although AKP called itself a fraternity, there is little record of the kind of social activities one normally associates with fraternities. Meetings commonly included speeches and debates on selected topics. The documents also show a high level of sentimentality, as members speak of "Love, Purity, Fidelity", and describe speeches as "breathing purity of principle and containing the spirit of eloquence." These notions, as well as the fraternity's strong stance against its members being intoxicated, probably stood in contrast to the more social aspects of other fraternities on campus, and undoubtedly played a role in AKP's demise.
