Danville, Ky., November 1, 1878

Dear Sir:

A number of students of the Sophomore class, among whom was your son (or ward), absented themselves from their last two recitations on the 29th ult., without sufficient reason and in violation of the solemn obligation assumed on matriculation, whereby they voluntarily bound themselves, in good faith, to obey all the laws and regulations of the College as long as they continued members of the same. Their offence is aggravated by the fact that it was not committed in thoughtlessness, but was done deliberately and in open defiance to college authority. The offence is considered without excuse and without extenuation.

For this misdemeanor, therefore, it was ordered by the Faculty that its severe censure by pronounced upon the students in question and recorded in the minutes; that all the offenders shall have five deducted from their average grade in Latin and Mathematics for this term; and that their parents or guardians be informed of their offence and its punishment.

In pursuance of this order this communication is made to you.

Very respectfully, A. B. Nelson, Secretary Faculty Centre College

Thursday, December 3, 1878, 3 p.m.

Meetings of the Faculty were held Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday of this week for the purpose of investigating various disorders which have been committed recently by students of the College. All the members of the Faculty were present but Dr. McKee and Prof. Cheek.

At these meetings there appeared and were examined the following persons: Moffat, Bishop, Walton, Miller (Freshman), Ratliffe, Allen, Miller (Sub-Freshmen), Lapsley McKee, Thomas (Freshman), Van Winkle, Wiseman, Marks, Hays, Durham, all students of the College, and Lucas not a student.

After a prolonged and careful investigation the Faculty reached the following conclusions, based upon the admissions made by the accused parties themselves and upon the testimony of others:

  1. That on Friday night the 15 inst. Marks and Wiseman made an attempt to haze certain students of the College Home, going out on the Perryville turnpike for the purpose of waylaying and maltreating them, and failing only because their intended victims did not fall into the trap for them.
  2. That a pistol was seen in the hands of Marks after going out on the road, and there is a strong probability that it was in their possession while waiting for their victims.
  3. That on Sunday the [blank] inst. Marks, Wiseman, Hays and Durham, with others, took possession of a hand-car of the C.S.R.W., placed it upon the track and ran away with it, going out to Goresburg and returning, where they were intercepted by one of the employees of the road.
  4. That Wiseman wantonly created outrageous disorder, above the rooms of Prof. Hitchcock and for the confessed purpose of annoying him, and repeated the same within a few minutes, after a reprimand and remonstrance by Prof. Hitchcock.
  5. That on another night Hays placed several lumps of coal in Ratliffe's bed and other articles in his pillow and slippers.
  6. That Bishop in open daylight deliberately and intentionally broke two panes in a window of Ratliffe's room.
  7. That Durham appeared to have something to do with the attempt at hazing, though not so deeply involved as Marks and Wisemann, but the proof was not conclusive.

It was therefore ordered

  1. That Durham receive a private censure before the Faculty, and be required to give a pledge of future good behavior.
  2. That Bishop be publicly reprimanded and his father informed of his offence: and that he be required to replace the broken glass.

An adjournment was then taken without further action.

Faculty held a called meeting in Dr. Beatty's room with all present but Dr. McKee and Prof. Cheek.

Hays appeared and expressed great contrition for his recent offences and begged for mercy on the part of the Faculty. It was therefore ordered that he be publicly censured and required to give a pledge of future good behavior; and that his father be notified of his offences.

In the case of Wiseman, his father withdrew him from College with the permission of the Faculty.

Marks was publicly dismissed in accordance with Chapter 6, Section 1 of the College Laws.

Adjourned.

Faculty held its regular session in Dr. Beatty's recitation room with all present but Dr. McKee. Opened with prayer by Secretary. Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved.

Durham appeared and received the censure of the Faculty for his recent misdemeanor.

Dunlap (Junior) and Barbour appeared to answer for absence from Prof. de Soto's room. Their excuses being considered utterly insufficient, it was ordered that they be censured by the President before the faculty and their parents notified of the proceeding.

The case of Ernst was reconsidered and it was decided that he be allowed to join the sophomore class at the beginning of the next term in February, conditioned in any study in which he may be deficient.

It was ordered that the Senior Class be required to hand in their first composition on the first Monday after Christmas under penalty of having 33 1/3 percent deducted from their grade in the department of Rhetoric.
