Centre College Faculty Minutes (Vol. 4 - 1901)

Session 1901-1902

September 9, 1901

This being the first meeting of the Faculty subsequent to the consolidation of Centre College and Central University, President Roberts gave a brief talk upon the subject of the consolidation and the proposed work of the College under the new control, and then made the following appointments:

Dean of the Faculty - Prof. Fales
Secretary of the Faculty - Prof. Crooks
Chairman of the Athletic Committee - Prof. Gordon
Faculty Committee on Entrance - Prof. Cheek & Prof. Crooks

Dr. Logan, Prof. Gordon, & Prof. Redd were appointed to meet & enroll the Seniors, Juniors, & Sophomores respectively. It was decided that applicants for admission into the Sophomore class should be examined at 2 P.M. Thursday, September 12. Prof. Fales & Prof. Crooks were made a committee to prepare a schedule.

The faculty met at 3 P.M. The schedule of recitations was reported & adopted.

September 12, 1901.

Messrs. Brown & Lafon were classified as electives until they should make up their conditions in Mathematics, Latin, & Science. Voted that all Central University men be classified as they would have been at Central University. Mr. Freland presented a certificate of work done in Logic & Evidences in a Texas College. Voted that this be accepted, provided Dr. Logan should consider the work done an equivalent for our requirements.

September 13, 1901

Faculty met at 11:15 A.M. Thomas Jackson classified as Sophomore with the privilege of taking such Junior studies as he might find it possible to take. E.W. Lee, Jr. enrolled as Junior, but conditioned in Soph. Greek. J.W. Farmer enrolled as Junior with Soph. Mathematics & Latin to make up. D. Woodward deficient in Latin. Hambrick deficient in Latin. Both classified as Freshmen, but required to make up their deficiencies. Voted that English be made elective throughout the Senior year.

In view of Prof. Acheson's letter & offer-Their information, E. Brown was enrolled a Junior with the privilege of making up his Sophomore conditions.

September 23, 1901

The Faculty meet & appointed President Roberts to represent the University at the inauguration of Dr. Jenkins as President of Kentucky University.

September 30, 1901

After examination of all the papers of the competitors for the Miller Entrance Prize, it was decided that Mr. Francis W. Andrews, of Memphis, Tenn., was entitled to the 1st prize, & Mr. William B. Hall to the 2nd prize.

The following regulations in regard to absence from chapel & from class were adopted:

  1. Any student who shall be absent from chapel services three times shall be interviewed by Prof. Cheek.
  2. Any student who shall be absent from any class three times shall be interviewed by the Professor in charge.
  3. When a student shall have been absent from chapel or from any class six times, the fact shall be reported to his parents or guardian.
  4. When a student shall have been absent nine times from chapel or from any class, he shall be summoned before the Faculty to show cause why he shall not be dismissed.

The Faculty met & went over the different classes to ascertain whether all students had the proper number of studies.

October 21, 1901

Peterson allowed to take Physics instead of English as he expects to teach the former. Professors Cheek, Waggener, & Crooks were appointed to prepare the catalogue for publication. Dr. Roberts was chosen to represent the University at the meeting Association of Southern Colleges.

November 4, 1901

The Faculty met for the consideration of the conduct of certain students on the night of October 31 & on the following day. Dr. Roberts was requested to make the following statements at the chapel exercises the next morning-that all damage to the College buildings must be made good & that punishment for disorder in the case of certain students was still under consideration.

November 8, 1901

Special meeting of the Faculty. D. & S. Godbey were allowed to substitute German for Physics because of a conflict. Dr. Roberts presented charges of disorder against the following students: J.M. Reid, J.C. Eastland, J. Hunter, C. Gourley, & H. Hendy. The Secretary was instructed to summon these gentlemen to be present at the next meeting of the Faculty.

Reid, Gourley, Eastland, Hunter, Hendy were present & made statements as to charges of disorder. After hearing Gourley, Hendy & Hunter, the Faculty voted that they be privately admonished by Dr. Roberts. The cases of Reid & Eastland were postponed until Thursday November 14.

Special meeting of Faculty. J.M. Reid & J.C. Eastland were dismissed because of repeated misdemeanors & neglect of duty.

Faculty met, but no business of importance was transacted.

December 10, 1901

T.L. Sallee, Sudduth, & McElroy gave satisfactory explanations of absences. R.E. Roberts was required to bring a note from his father stating whether it was necessary for him to remain at home & work in the afternoons instead of attending his classes in Chemistry.

December 11, 1901

A scheme of work providing for two additional courses of study leading to the degree of B.S. (Bachelor of Science) was reported to the Faculty by Prof. Gordon, and referred to the Board of Trustees with the recommendation that it be approved. Professors Gordon & Palmer were appointed to meet the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees & give any desired information concerning the proposed courses of study.
