January 3, 1905

Call meeting of Faculty. Names of all students who had been conditional upon the work of the first term, were reported to President Hinitt. The case of Jasper McClure, who wished to reenter College, was left to Dr. Hinitt, who stated that he would write to McClure's father to the effect that the question would be considered when all examinations for the first term had been passed by Jasper.

Call meeting of Faculty. The following temporary arrangement for the classes in English was made: Prof. Redd to take the Freshman work. Prof. Cheek to take the Sophomore work. The Junior English class to report to Prof. Palmer for work in Chemistry. The Senior English class to make new election of work to take the place of the English. Gray required to take up Drawing & Botany. H.L. Smith transferred to roll of special students. Hundley & Riner transferred from Sophomore to Freshman class.

Regular meeting of Faculty. The following report of the committee on the Masters degree was adopted.

Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts: Bachelors of the several courses of the academic department of Centre College of Central University of Kentucky, or graduates of other institutions having requirements for the baccalaureate degree which are substantially equivalent, may be enrolled in he Graduate Department as candidates for the degree of Master of Arts, (A.M.). Applications for enrollment must be made in writing to the Committee on Graduate Studies not later than October 1st of the collegiate year in which the degree is to be taken. In case the degree is not conferred after one year of study, a second notice must be filed with the Committee three months before the second examination, accompanied by a fee of $25.00

With the application an outline of the candidate's intended course of graduate study must be submitted together with the signed approbation of the Professors with whom he expects to work. This choice of subjects is final.

The tuition fee of the Graduate Department is $66.00, payable in advance in three equal installments at the opening of each term. In addition a diploma fee of $10.00, payable when the thesis is submitted for examination.

The degree of Master of Arts will be conferred upon those candidates who, having complied with the above requirements, shall have completed the required graduate work as follows:

  1. They shall have completed to the satisfaction of the Professors in charge a course of graduate study, which is equivalent to fifteen hours of class work a week.
  2. This course shall be pursued at this College during a residence of not less than one collegiate year. Work "in absentia" will not be recognized toward a degree.
  3. This course of study shall consist of a principal subject (Major) and a subsidiary subject (Minor).
  4. The Major and the Minor subjects must be chosen, with the consent of the Committee on Graduate Studies, in different but related departments.
  5. The courses must be of an advanced character and the work done by the candidate show zeal and ability. No subject counted for the baccalaureate degree or toward a professional degree will be counted for the Master's Degree.
  6. Of the fifteen hours of required work a week, five hours shall be devoted to the minor subject.
  7. Not later than one month before Commencement the candidate must submit to the Committee on Graduate Studies a thesis approved by the professor in charge of the major course.
  8. The candidate's thesis having been approved by the Committee, he must pass a satisfactory examination before a board of three examiners, consisting of the professors in charge of the candidates major and minor subjects and a representative of the Committee on Graduate Studies. The signatures of the three members of the examining board must appear on the report of the examination to the President of the University.
  9. Before the successful candidate receives his diploma he must deposit in the University Library a typewritten copy of his thesis, properly bound.

March 3, 1905

Regular meeting of Faculty. President Hinitt stated that he had in his possession a numerously signed petition from the students asking for a change of the college colors, and expressed his own desire for such change. He then appointed Profs. Blayney and Cheek as a committee whose duty it should be to ascertain the colors of institutions near us in order a conflict of colors in case of change.

March 10, 1905

Regular meeting of Faculty. The following regulations governing the classification of students were adopted:

  1. No student shall be admitted to the Sophomore, Junior, or Senior class, who at the time of application is more than fifteen term hours behind the class he desires to enter.
  2. No student shall be admitted to the Freshman class, who at the time of application is more than twenty term hours behind the class he desires to enter.

March 24, 1905

Regular meeting of Faculty. The Faculty accepted an invitation to participate in the revival of the Association of Kentucky Colleges at a meeting to be held in Lexington on Saturday April 8. Profs. Throckmorton and Palmer were made a committee to ascertain what members of the Faculty wish to attend the banquet following the meeting of the Association. The Secretary was instructed to write to Mr. B.J. Durham requesting to withdraw his son, W.W. Durham, from Centre College because of neglect of duty. E.M. Dycus was dismissed from college because of continued and persistent neglect of duty, the Secretary being instructed to inform him of his dismissal. Profs. Throckmorton, Redd, and Cheek were appointed a committee on Senior theses.

Meeting called of President Hinitt. Present - President Hinitt, & Professors Fales, Logan, Nelson, Redd, Cheek, Crooks, Palmer, Blayney, & Throckmorton. Professor Throckmorton as Chairman of the Faculty Committee on Athletics reported that one Chilton, who has no connection with the University either as student or otherwise, had been taken on the southern trip of the baseball team & had played in certain games under the name of S.C. Watkins. Watkins being regular member of the team. Secretary to summon A. Rhorer & G.O. Letcher, manager & captain of baseball team.

Meeting called by President Hinitt. Present - President Hinitt, Professors Fales, Logan, Nelson, Redd, Cheek, Palmer, Throckmorton, Blayney, & Crooks. Arthur Rhorer, manager, & G.O. Letcher, captain of the baseball team were present and admitted that they had taken Chilton on the southern trip & had used him as pitcher in games played against the teams of Vanderbilt University and the University of the South. As they stated that a majority of the members of the team favored taking a man who was not a student & playing him under an assumed name it was decided to hear all of the members of the team, & adjournment was had to three o'clock p.m. June 2nd for that purpose.

Andrews members of the baseball team were present and satisfied the Faculty that they were in no way responsible for taking Chilton on the southern trip. Faculty met pursuant to adjournment. Present - President Hinitt & Professors Fales, Logan, Nelson, Redd, Cheek, Crooks, Palmer & Throckmorton. Voted that the Sidney J. Johnson Prize be awarded upon the basis of all Junior grades for all men who have completed the full work of the Junior year, whether that work were all done in one year or a longer period. Clifton Rodes, L.L. Morton, W.U. Guerrant, & Herbert Spencer of the baseball team were present & satisfied the Faculty that they were not responsible for taking Chilton on the southern trip. Profs. Throckmorton & Blayney were appointed a committee to pass upon the Class Day parts, & were instructed not to permit the name of a lady to be used in any speech. Adjourned to three o'clock June 5, 1905.

Faculty met pursuant to adjournment. Present - President Hinitt, & Profs. Fales, Redd, Cheek, Logan, Throckmorton, Nelson, Palmer, Blayney & Crooks. The following action was unanimously taken:

In as much as the following facts have been established to the satisfaction of the Faculty of Centre College, namely

  1. That on the recent trip South of the baseball team, the Manager of the team A.W. Rhorer and the Captain of the team G.O.Letcher did play in certain games S.B. Chilton under the name of S.C. Watkins, a regular member of the team, said Chilton having no connection with the College as a student or otherwise, and
  2. That this fraudulent use of said player, contrary to all the rules of intercollegiate athletics, and the declared and clearly understood policy of the administration of Centre College, has resulted in a formal protest from the Faculty of Vanderbilt University and has brought grave discredit to this College and injury to its interests and standing among collegiate institutions of the South;

Be it resolved by the Faculty of Centre College that these facts be made known to the Board of Trustees at the June meeting, and that pending action by the Board the above named Seniors be placed under censure, and be disbarred from participation in a representative capacity in the Class Day exercise; Be it further that the President of the University be requested to represent to the Board the sentiments of the Faculty on this occurrence.

The following were recommended to the Trustees for the degree of Doctor of Laws:

Recommendations was made to the Board that the degree of Bachelor of Science be conferred upon John Edward Sampson whenever he shall complete the course leading to that degree. Professor W. T. St. Claire, A.B. (1880) was recommended to the Board for the degree of Master of Arts as a recognition of scholarship as evinced in his publications.

The Henry Barrel Boyle Prize was awarded to William Lyne Starling of Hopkinsville, Ky. The Ormand Beatty Alumni Prize was divided between Waller Chenault Hudson and Leon Lincoln Morton of Lancaster, Ky., and Wady, Ky., respectively. The Sydney J. Johnson Prize was awarded to John Leslie Purdom of Forkland, Ky.

The Freshman Prizes were awarded as follows: in the Classical Course to John Cowan Bogle, Jr., of Danville, Ky.; in the Scientific Course to Thomas Craddock Powell of Uniontown, Ky.

Meeting called by the President to consider plan of procedure on the opening day of the session. Meeting opened with prayer by President Hinitt. Present - Dr. Hinitt anProfessorsrs, Fales, Logan, Nelson, Redd, Cheek, Crooks, Gordon, Throckmorton, Blayney, Fulton, & Clark. The following committee on Accredited Schools was appointed. President Hinitt Chairman and Professors Gordon, Fulton, Blayney, Cheek, Throckmorton, Crooks, and Clark, and Dr. Blanton. Two sub-committees were appointed: on Private High Schools and Academies, Prof. Crooks, Chairman, & Profs. Fulton and Clark; on Public High Schools, Prof. Blayney, Chairman, and Profs. Cheek and Throckmorton. The regulation allowing the individual members of the Faculty at their own options, to excuse from the examinations at the close of the first and second terms students who make a grade of 85 on the terms work in any subject, was amended so as to make the grade required for exemption 90 instead of 85.
