November 18, 1908

Present - President Hinitt & Professors Redd, Cheek, Crooks, Gordon, Throckmorton, Blayney, Fulton, Clark, & Rainey. The following resolutions were reported by Dr. Blayney & adopted. Resolutions of respected adopted by the Faculty of Central University on the death of Dr. James Venable Logan:

It is with feelings approaching awe that the Faculty of Central University find themselves called upon to make record of the character & services of Rev. James Venable Logan, D.D. LL.D. so suddenly called from our midst by death.

Dr. Logan was a graduate of Centre College in the class of 1854 & of Danville Theological Seminary, Class of 1860. He served the church of Harrodsburg as its pastor for eight years & afterwards became editor of "The Free Christian Commonwealth" of Louisville. But it was to the cause of education that the greater part of his life was devoted.

At the time of the organization of Central University at Richmond, Ky., Dr. Logan was one of the most zealous promoters of the movement & among the largest contributors to the cause. He was elected to the chair of Ethics & afterwards made President of the Faculty of that institution, which positions he filled with ability up to the time of the consolidation of Centre College & Central University, at which time he was transferred to the same chair in the consolidated institution, where he labored faithfully to the time of his retirement to the Carnegie Foundation, June last, at his own request. Dr. Logan was a man of a high order of intellectual faculties, a finished scholar, a clear reasoner, a widely read litterateur, an enthusiastic teacher, beloved by his students.

As a Faculty we can speak of him only in terms of affection and veneration. Always faithful to his duties, modest & retiring in his disposition, lenient in his judgements, wise in counsel, a man with whom one might fifer but never contend, genial & companionable, he was a true Christian gentleman beloved by all fortunate enough to know him intimately.

Be it therefore resolved, that the above be spread upon our minutes as an expression of our esteem for our departed colleague & that in testimony of our sympathy a copy be sent to the members of the bereaved family.
