Centre College Faculty Minutes (Vol. 2 - 1883)

12:30 p.m., Friday, January 19, 1883

Faculty met with all present but Dr. McKee & Prof. Cheek. The schedule of the semi-annual examinations was arranged for Jany. 23, 24, 25. The Senior class petitioned to be allowed to substitute a course in Greek Literature for the usual course in Thucydides. Prof. Redd was advised to compromise by giving them some easier author to read & as large a course in Greek Literature as possible. Adjourned.

The Faculty held a called meeting with all present. Robert Caldwell was present to answer for using improper language to Prof. Cheek. It was ordered, after investigation of the case, that he be required to apologize to Prof. Cheek in the presence of the class. The election to speakerships of Rozer and Whittham by the Deinologian Society, and of Sumrall and S. McKee by the Chamberlain Society, was declared null and void on the ground that they were not nominated by the Faculty; and it was ordered that the Societies, if they elect at all, must elect from the students nominated by the Faculty. The Faculty further recommended that the Societies abolish the June declamations. Adjourned.

Faculty met with all present but Dr. McKee. Opened with prayer by Prof. Fales. An advertisement of College of one-fourth page was ordered to be inserted in the Kentucky Directory published by J.L. Polk & Co., Chicago, the advertisement and one copy of the book to cost $10. Adjourned.

Faculty held its weekly meeting with all present but Dr. McKee. Gregory appeared to answer for improper conduct in Prof. Redd's room. It was ordered that he apologize to Prof. Redd, and it was furthermore ordered that he be required to go back into the Freshman class, on account of his deficiencies in his studies. Adjourned.

Faculty met with all present. List of books for Library was made out & ordered to be purchased. Bids for the printing of the catalogue were receivedd from the Kentucky Advocate & Danville Tribune, and that of the Advocate being the lowest was accepted. They are to print 1000 catalogues for $38, in the style of catalog for 1880-01. Adjourned.

Faculty met with all the members present. Opened with prayer by the Secretary. Profs. Cheek & Redd, appointed a committee to examine McAlister & Samuel McKee, reported that they had failed to pass the examination. The President was directed to summon Gregory to meet the Faculty at a special meeting on Monday at 12 noon to answer for general delinquencies. Adjourned.

Faculty held its regular weekly meeting, all being present. Gregory appeared in answer to summons. In view of his numerous absences and his deficiency in his studies, in spite of admonition from the Faculty, it was ordered that he be informed that any further complaint against him will result in his immediate dismissal from College. Faculty held its regular weekly with all present. An examination of the grades of the Senior Class for the entire four years of their course having shown that John Burgin had received the highest mark for scholarship, he was awarded the valedictory. Adjourned.

The Faculty held a meeting with all the members present. It was resolved that the Faculty strongly recommend to the Board of Trustees for the degree of A.B. the two ladies of the Senior class Misses Leila S. McKee and Margaret E. Randolph with the conviction that no harm will result to the College by such action. The Faculty also recommended the following gentlemen of the Senior class for the bachelor's degree.

*The Boyle Prize was awarded to William B. Matthews. Additional prized of $10 each were awarded to Harry L. Briggs, Murray R. Hubbard, and James A. Williams. The Kentucky Advocate Gold Medal for best examination in English was awarded to Murray R. Hubbard.

The Faculty held its final meeting before vacation, all the members being present. The reports for the last five months were made out. Prof. Fales was directed to have 1,000 College advertising circulars printed at the Advocate Printing Office. Adjourned.

Faculty held its first regular meeting for the new session with all the members present. Opened with prayer by Dr. McKee. It was resolved that the Board of Trustees be asked to change the day of opening of College from Monday to Wednesday. It was further resolved that the Faculty recommend to the Board that the degree of the B.S. be conferred on students who complete and stand an examination on all the studies of the scientific course. Adjourned.

Faculty held its regular meeting, all being present. Opened with prayer by the Secretary. It was resolved that the Synod at its approaching meeting in Danville be invited to visit the College at such time as may suit its convenience. The question of binding certain books in the College Library was left to a committee consisting of Dr. Beatty and Prof. Fales. It was resolved that a College parlor be fitted up in the College Home for use of students as a place of meeting for prayer, etc. Adjourned.

Faculty held a meeting with all the members present. On their petition permission was given to several students to organize a chapter of the Kappa Alpha society. Dr. Beatty & Prof. Fales were appointed on the furnishing of the College Parlor. Adjourned.

Faculty met, all the members present, and was opened with prayer by Dr. McKee. It was resolved that the Faculty institute courses of popular lectures in medicine, law, etc., to be delivered by members of the several professions in Danville. The following new prizes were established:

One in Greek for the Freshman Class by Prof. Redd.

One in English ($50) for the Sophomore Class by Prof. Cheek & Sam Boyle.

One in Geology ($25) for the Junior Class by Prof. Fales.

One in Mental Science &c., ($50) for the Senior Class by President Beatty.
