"At a meeting of the Trustees of the Centre College of Kentucky on the first day of February 1819...." So begins the first entry for the minutes of the Centre College Board of Trustees, the most important and continuous record of the college's history. Volumes 1-4, covering the years 1819-1853 and 1863-1901, document the institution's early struggles, affiliation with the Presbyterian Church, growth in the pre-Civil War years, finances, and the slowly evolving nature of the college in the later decades of the century. Unfortunately, the volume covering the years 1854-1862 has been lost for many years, and its fate remains unknown. In 1823 the Kentucky General Assembly created the Asylum for the Deaf and Dumb, today's Kentucky School for the Deaf, and placed it's control in the hands of Centre's Trustees. Until 1848, when a separate journal was begun, the Trustees minutes include entries for the Asylum, and provide a rich source of information on the early history of that institution.
