John C. Young Papers

Presbyterian minister and educator, John C. Young served as the president of Centre College from 1830 until his death in office in 1857.

Young, John C. Letter to David G. Cowan (March 22, 1832)
Soon after his election in 1830 as president of Centre College, John C. Young travelled to New York to raise funds for the college. In this letter to David G. Cowan, secretary of the Board of Trustees, Young describes the financial problems of the times, his difficulty in raising money, the general financial condition of the college, and comments on a student petition to the Trustees requesting that Thomas C. Nichols, principal of the Preparatory Department, be dismissed.

Letter from John C. Young to David G. Cowan, secretary of the Centre College Board of Trustees, describing Young's efforts in New York at raising money for the college, the importance of two new faculty positions, and the personnel situation at the college's grammar school.
Young, John C. Letter to Charles Hodge (June 15, 1836)
Letter expressing Young's views on slavery and emancipation. The letter was no doubt prompted by Hodge's lengthy review of William E. Channing's Slavery (1835) in The Biblical Repertory and Theological Review (April 1836). Hodge taught at the Princeton Theological Seminary Seminary. A powerful advocate for conservative Presbyterian doctrine, he edited the Princeton Review for more than 40 years.

Young, John C. President's Report to the Board of Trustees (March 24, 1845)
Report by Young to the Centre College Board of Trustees, noting the increase in the number of students, and the decline in student behavior, in particular the increase in student drinking. He offers some observations on the causes of the problem, and lists the number of students dismissed from college in an effort to remedy the situation.
